Illuminations Support Group

The Illuminations support group is an organized group of individuals who share the common experience of domestic violence. The group meets on Thursdays, at Turning Pointe, from 12:00-1:30pm. Please note that this support group is not a therapy group.

Illuminations is not run by a therapist and can be simply facilitated by a member of the group. The group is currently headed by the Shelter Manager of Turning Pointe and provides an environment of supportive communication based on sharing and informative issues regarding domestic violence. This group is not for resolution of deeper issues.

Some of the topics that may be covered in support group include: Defining abuse, patterns of abuse, emotional abuse, anger about abuse, common experiences of abuse, impact on children, assertiveness, boundaries, women and sexuality, shame and guilt, grief and loss, depression, self-care, healthy relationships and evaluating new relationships.

Support groups can be very positive experiences. However, it is possible that deeper issues may be triggered and can cause trauma for those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is therefore important that involvment in support groups be discussed with a trained therapist.
